There is a quiet revolution happening on rooftops across Europe. No bulky frames, no intrusive black rectangles — just the clean, unbroken lines of a traditional tiled roof, silently generating electricity from the sun. This is the world Solinso has been building since its founding in 2015, and the vision its founder Paul de Jong had been working toward since 2004.
Where it all started
Most solar companies begin with energy. Solinso began with beauty.
When Paul de Jong first started exploring solar cell technologies twenty years ago, the market was still in its infancy. Traditional solar panels were an engineering achievement, but a visual compromise — something homeowners tolerated rather than welcomed. As the solar industry began scaling up around 2009 and building-integrated photovoltaics started entering conversation, Paul saw a different question emerge: what if solar energy could enhance a roof rather than disrupt it?
Together with industrial designer Bart Allard, Paul spent years researching materials, testing prototypes, and refining the answer. By 2015, after rigorous testing to ensure durability across 25 years of outdoor exposure, the result was ready: the Mystiek solar roof tile — a BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaic) solution that sits flush between standard clay tiles, captures daylight, and generates clean energy, all without anyone noticing it’s there.
- In October 2015, the first Mystiek project was installed. Solinso B.V. was officially born.
The Art of being invisible
What makes Solinso’s approach distinctive is its core design principle: the solar panel should disappear into the roof.
The Mystiek tiles are engineered to fit seamlessly between existing roof tiles, preserving the horizontal lines and visual rhythm of a traditional roof. Each tile replaces five to six standard tiles, depending on the roof type. A matte glass surface keeps reflections low and appearance subtle. When paired with black-glazed roof tiles, the integration becomes nearly seamless — renewable energy that looks exactly like a roof is supposed to look.
This is not a minor aesthetic detail. For many homeowners, the appearance of traditional solar panels has been the single biggest barrier to adoption. Solinso’s answer wasn’t to ask customers to accept a visual trade-off — it was to eliminate the trade-off entirely.
Twenty Years of Expertise, Built into Every Tile
Solinso carries over twenty years of accumulated knowledge in solar cell technologies and more than a decade specifically focused on solar roof tile development. That depth of experience shows in the product’s certifications: CE marking, Kiwa BDA approval, and TÜV GS certification, among others. These aren’t just badges — they represent the rigorous testing and quality standards that give homeowners and installers the confidence to choose a product that must perform reliably for decades.
The company reached its 500-roof milestone in 2019, then continued growing. Today, Solinso has completed installations on more than 1,800 solar-integrated roofs across Europe, with projects spanning the Netherlands, Germany, and beyond.
Growing with the Market
Solinso’s product range is constantly growing. On one hand, new models are continuously being developed to match an ever-expanding range of roof tile types across Europe — an ongoing innovation process to serve as many roofs as possible. On the other hand, Solinso offers three colour lines, each with their own character: the Mystiek series in sleek black, the TerraCotta series that harmoniously matches warm terracotta-coloured roofs, and the Spectrum series for roofs that call for a custom approach — think slate roofs, thatched roofs, or roof tiles in an unusual colour. With Spectrum, the solar tile is colour-matched to the specific situation, ensuring the result always blends in seamlessly.
Entering each new market requires navigating local building regulations, architectural standards, and installer networks. Solinso approaches this methodically, building relationships with professional roofers, construction companies, and architects who share a commitment to sustainable building without compromising on design.
Built on a clear vision
Solinso’s ambition is straightforward: to become Europe’s trusted partner in the future of solar roofing. That means continuing to innovate on tile compatibility, expanding installer networks, improving performance, and making BIPV solutions accessible to a broader market — new construction and renovation alike.
The team behind this mission is small but specialized, driven by the same passion that started the company: the belief that sustainability and aesthetics are not opposing forces. A beautiful roof and a sustainable home are not a compromise. At Solinso, they are the same thing.
For homeowners considering solar energy, for architects designing with sustainability in mind, and for roofers looking to offer clients something genuinely different — Solinso has spent two decades becoming the quiet experts in making solar invisible.
