TerraCotta solar roof tiles

solar panels for listed buildings and historic roofs

Not every building is a blank canvas. TerraCotta is Solinso’s integrated solar panel for traditional and listed buildings: a solar roof tile whose colour is matched to the warm, earthy tones of classic terracotta roofing. Whereas conventional solar panels clash with the character of an older building, terracotta solar tiles blend in seamlessly. They simply belong there.

TERRACOTTA
Natural color technology

The colour of TerraCotta is matched to the characteristic shades of traditional clay and concrete terracotta roofing. From the street, at any distance from which a passer-by would normally view a roofline, the roof appears to be terracotta. The colour consistency between the solar tiles and the surrounding roof tiles ensures that the installation blends in with the whole rather than standing out.

Solar panels for listed buildings and heritage properties

Terracotta roofs define the skyline of historic town centres, villages and conservation areas throughout the Netherlands and Europe. The orange-red, amber and sienna hues are integral to the character of these buildings. This is precisely why installing standard solar panels on a listed building or within a conservation area is so challenging: a row of dark panels on a warm terracotta roof is visually jarring and is often rejected by heritage authorities.

An environmental permit is almost always required for solar panels on a listed building or within a conservation area, and each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Local authorities consider the impact on the appearance of the roof. A solar roof tile that looks like terracotta will lead to a different discussion than a panel that is visible on the roof. TerraCotta makes solar energy possible in places where a standard installation would be refused, without compromising the listed status or the appearance of the building. Traditional warm expression

TerraCotta is also ideal for non-listed buildings where the owner simply values the appearance of their home. A terracotta roof has warmth, character and a timeless quality that many homeowners are unwilling to sacrifice for the sake of energy generation. With TerraCotta, they don’t have to. The solar tiles retain the same warmth, lie flush with the existing roof surface and deliver the performance of modern cell technology behind an exterior that looks entirely traditional.

From street level, you see a terracotta roof. From an energy meter, you see a solar installation producing clean power year-round.

Modern performance behind a traditional exterior

with TOPCon or IBC technology

TerraCotta is built using M10 TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) cells. An ultra-thin oxide layer minimises energy loss within the cell, ensuring high efficiency and stable performance.

Are solar panels permitted on a listed building?

An planning permission is usually required, and each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Local authorities focus primarily on the impact on the appearance of the roof. A terracotta-coloured solar roof tile blends in better than a standard panel.

Yes, TerraCotta was developed for that purpose. The colour is designed to match traditional terracotta roof tiles, and the tiles lie flush with the roof. A planning permission is still required, and the assessment is always carried out on a case-by-case basis.

Solar panels are fitted to your roof, on top of the roof tiles. Solar roof tiles serve as both solar panels and roofing: they replace some of the roof tiles and lie flush with the rest of the roof.

TerraCotta uses modern M10 TOPCon cells and achieves up to 166 W/m². By comparison, Mystiek achieves up to 211 W/m².

TerraCotta is not laid on top of the roof tiles, but replaces some of them and is compatible with a range of roof tiles with a similar profile, including the Nelskamp G10. Visit our product page and find the right panel for the right roof tile.
